What is Somatic Therapy?

Woman enjoying the open air and freedom while sitting in a hay field during sunset.

Somatic therapy operates off the idea that what happens to you in life is stored not only in your mind but also in your body. The fight/flight response is a physiological reaction to danger, which becomes overactive when we go through difficult things. Learning to understand and retrain our overactive adaptive response is essential and very possible for many of us.

Somatic therapy is a comprehensive approach. Mind/body therapy recognizes and acknowledges that life challenges and trauma do not just affect your emotions. They can manifest through physical sensations in the body. Healing can occur when you learn to understand and manage the body sensations.

“In order to change, people need to become aware of their sensations and the way that their bodies interact with the world around them.” Bessel VanDer Kolk- psychiatrist, author, researcher and educator

Mindfulness

Fears and insecurities about the past and the future can make it difficult to fully appreciate the present. The skill of being mindful encompasses awareness and acceptance.

Mindfulness is the practice of being in the present moment without judgment. It is the ability to be engaged and available with a sense of inner calm and peace. It cultivates moments of joy, serenity and awe.

Learning to be mindful allows you to identify your needs and prioritize your well-being, leading to more intention and effective self-care practice.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is an empirically supported (well-researched), and structured model of psychotherapeutic treatment that involves working with memories, body sensations, core-self beliefs, and emotions to eliminate the residential emotional, somatic, and cognitive remnants of painful experiences.

Polyvagal Theory

Polyvagal Theory (PVT) is a concept introduced by Stephen Porges in 1994, which explores the role of the vagus nerve in emotion regulation, social connection, and fear response.

The theory is named after the vagus nerve, a cranial nerve that is a primary component of the parasympathetic nervous system. Understanding the state of your nervous system will help to manage  how secure and connected we feel in day-to-day life.

Jennifer Burrous BS, MPH, LMSW    Certified EMDR Therapist, EMDRIA Consultant

Welcome to Somatic Healing.                                                                  I am a continual learner, always in wonder, always curious. I started my quest in somatic work as a mental health clinician with a background in exercise and wellness. My work in wellness education and the idea that optimal health is a state of physical, mental, and social wellbeing was influential in my desire to bring the mind and body together in my therapy practice. It just makes                                               sense.

My experience with EMDR and Polyvagel theory has been transformational for myself as a clinician and for the many clients and consultees that i work with. It has reinforced the idea that emotions and experiences are stored in the body, not just the mind. Mind/body therapy that incorporates breathing techniques, movement practices, and work with self energy & self compassion have been shown to influence the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and nervous system functions which enhance emotional wellbeing and self regulation.

It is important to me that i continue to be informed in the therapeutic modalities that are effective and life changing. I have found EMDR, Polyvagel, and Internal Family Systems to influence the introspective change that is necessary for growth and healing. I am an EMDRIA Consultant and certified in EMDR Therapy.   I am Polyvagel and IFS informed. I practice mindfulness, yoga, meditation and spiritual connection for myself and with my clients. I specialize in working with trauma, life transitions, anxiety, depression and grief.

If you are interested in learning more about somatic therapy and other modalities that i utilize, you are welcome to schedule a 15 minute consultation or read one of the articles under the blog section. I am here to support you through your time of healing and transformation.
